A couple of weeks ago I wrote a blog explaining what Unified Communications is. If you use a UC phone system, you might not even know where it physically is. Perhaps you’ve never thought about it?  You can just pick up the phone, and it works. But the system is there, somewhere – it may be just working away in a closet somewhere in your business, or it may be far away in some data center (for those running their UC systems on the cloud). Either way, it is available whenever you need it, and you probably don’t need to think about it too much. (Or if you’re still stuck with an old-school PBX, maybe you dream about having a UC system to improve work efficiency in between daydreams of going to the beach, right?)

A Typical Day for UC

But have you ever thought about what your UC phone system actually does, or could do, for you in a typical day? It does a lot, and it’s easy to take it for granted. But whether you are aware of it or not, UC helps improve work efficiency by facilitating better and easier communication in the workplace.

UC is able to do this because it unifies all the different types of communication. This enables better multi-tasking, as well as actual real-time communication (that doesn’t necessarily have to be voice calling). These functions improve work efficiency and increase perceptions of productivity. This effect is produced by UC decreasing the time it takes to get work done and providing the ability to effectively work on multiple tasks at the same time, all while reducing costs. This makes users feel more efficient in their positions and actually helps them contribute better work.

In other words, it helps you get your job done better. And who doesn’t need that.
